We see on this Christmas card the Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi from the East. Andrea Mantegna includes a colorful train of attendants following the wise men with their gifts. The Seraphim at the entrance of the Nativity cave dramatically frame the central figures of the Virgin Mother and the infant Christ, possibly alluding to Isaiah 6:1-7. Jesus's divinity is further highlighted by his gesture of benediction.
"On her hand she carried God Who is carried by the Seraphim. And her knees became His throne." - St. John of Damascus
