This Christmas card features one of the illuminated pages in the Belles Heures du Duc de Berry (The Beautiful Hours of the Duke of Berry) manuscript, a lush and richly illustrated Book of Hours from the early 15th century.  Jean de France commissioned Franco-Netherlandish artists  known as the Limbourg brothers to enhance his liturgical text with 172 illuminations that mix Northern European style naturalistic themes with Italianate figures.

In this particular illustration, a choir of angels anounces the birth of Christ to humble shepherds  keeping watch in the nearby pastures of Bethlehem.

Text inside:
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people."    Luke 2:8-10
