Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Virgin and Child with Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara (c. 1480) by Hans Memling is also known as the Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine. Commonly depicted, Mary "Seat of Wisdom" is enthroned while holding an infant Jesus on her lap who is placing a betrothal ring on St. Catherine's finger. This mystical betrothal signifies a total religious conversion and perpetual virginity for Christ. We see the instruments of St. Catherine's torture and martyrdom beneath the folds of her garments, a breaking wheel and a sword. Flanking the other side of the Virgin and Child is St. Barbara sitting in front of the tower of her imprisonment. Memling encloses the scene with the hortus conclusus, the cloistured garden, a motif used to symbolize Mary's virginity.
